Resilient Construction

People sometimes assume that because Aruba sits outside the main hurricane belt, the climate is "easy" to build for. It isn't. The island has its own quiet, relentless set of challenges, and the buildings that hold up well over decades are the ones designed with those forces in mind from day one. Sun, salt, wind, and the occasional storm are working on every structure here, every day. Resilient construction is simply the practice of designing for what's actually happening outside your walls.

Here's what that looks like in Aruba specifically.

Understand the Local Climate First

Aruba's climate is tropical semi-arid: hot all year, with daytime temperatures typically in the 30 to 33°C range, low rainfall (roughly 450 mm annually, mostly between October and December), and famously persistent trade winds blowing from the northeast and east. The island sits about 12 degrees north of the equator and outside the typical hurricane track, though tropical systems do occasionally pass close enough to cause real damage.

That climate profile means the dominant forces on an Aruban building aren't the dramatic ones you'd design for in Florida or the Bahamas. They're the constant ones: relentless sun, steady salt-laden wind, sudden hard rainfall events, and rare but possible high-wind storms. Build for the everyday and you'll also be in much better shape when the unusual happens.

Start with the Right Structure

Most well-built Aruban homes use reinforced concrete block construction, and there's a good reason for it. Concrete and CMU (concrete masonry unit) walls handle high winds well, don't rot, don't burn easily, and shrug off the termite and insect pressure that destroys timber-framed homes in tropical climates. They also have thermal mass, which helps moderate indoor temperatures in a place where the sun beats down for over 3,000 hours a year.

If you're building new, ask your contractor about reinforcement details: how often vertical rebar runs through the block cells, how the bond beams tie the walls together, and how the roof structure is anchored to the walls. The connections between roof and wall are where most wind damage starts. Hurricane straps and properly tied-in roof structures are inexpensive insurance, and they should be standard on any serious build here, not an upgrade.

For roofs, concrete slab roofs offer the best durability and storm resistance, though they're heavier and more expensive. Tile or metal roofs over a well-engineered structure can also work, but the fasteners and underlayment matter enormously. Cheap roofing in Aruba is almost always false economy.

Plan for Salt and Sun

The two slowest, most underestimated destroyers of buildings here are salt air and UV. Salt corrodes anything metallic: rebar within concrete if it isn't deep enough below the surface, exposed fasteners, window frames, air conditioner condensers, light fixtures, hinges, railings. Closer to the coast, the effect is dramatic. Even inland, the trade winds carry enough salt to matter.

The defenses are practical. Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners wherever you can, especially anything exposed. Specify marine-grade hardware for railings and exterior fittings. Make sure concrete cover over rebar meets coastal-environment standards, not minimums. Choose aluminum or PVC window frames over standard steel. Position AC condenser units where they get some shelter from direct salt spray, and rinse them down periodically.

For UV, the sun degrades plastics, fades paint, dries out caulking and sealants, and cracks anything elastomeric. Choose UV-stable exterior finishes, plan to repaint exterior surfaces more often than you would in temperate climates, and don't use interior-grade materials anywhere they'll see sunlight through a window.

Design with the Wind

Aruba's trade winds are usually a friend, not a foe. They cool houses naturally, which can dramatically cut air conditioning costs if the building is designed to take advantage of them. Orient the long axis of the house roughly east-west so the prevailing easterly winds can blow through. Place windows on opposing walls to enable cross-ventilation. Use covered outdoor spaces, deep overhangs, and louvered openings to create shaded, breezy areas that feel comfortable even on hot afternoons.

But the same winds can become destructive in a storm. Keep roof overhangs reasonable (very deep eaves catch wind like sails), use hip roofs rather than gable roofs where possible since they handle wind from multiple directions better, and consider impact-rated windows or proper storm shutters for any glass facing the prevailing wind direction. A single broken window in a high-wind event can pressurize the interior of a house and lift the roof off.

Water: Less Than You Think, More Than You Plan For

Aruba is dry most of the year, which lulls people into underbuilding for rain. When storms do come, they often dump a lot of water in a short time on hard-packed ground that doesn't absorb it well. Flash flooding in low spots is a real risk.

Pay attention to site drainage from the design stage. Slope finished grade away from the house on all sides, install proper gutters and downspouts even though it doesn't rain often, and route water decisively away from the foundation. Cisterns and rainwater catchment systems are smart investments here, both for water conservation and for managing runoff. Inside the house, plan for occasional intense humidity even if average humidity is moderate: use mold-resistant drywall in wet areas, ventilate bathrooms properly, and don't trap moisture inside wall assemblies.

Energy Performance Matters More Than You'd Think

Cooling is the dominant energy cost in most Aruban homes, and electricity is expensive. The resilient choice is also the efficient one: a tight, well-insulated, well-shaded house simply costs less to live in. Insulate the roof generously, since that's where most heat enters. Specify low-E glazing on windows, especially on east and west elevations where the morning and afternoon sun is harshest. Use light-colored exterior finishes to reflect heat. Plant shade trees on the western side of the house where they'll do the most good.

Solar makes a great deal of sense here given the year-round sunshine, and pairing solar with a well-designed envelope means a house that's not just cheaper to run but also more resilient when the grid goes down.

Don't Cut Corners on the Things You Can't See

The visible parts of a house get attention. The hidden parts get cut when budgets tighten, and that's exactly backwards for resilience. Insist on quality on the structural connections, the waterproofing details around windows and roofs, the rebar placement, the electrical grounding, and the plumbing materials. These are the systems that determine whether your house is still in great shape in twenty-five years or limping along needing constant repair.

A good Aruban builder knows all of this in their bones. If you're talking to a contractor who shrugs off questions about salt protection, hurricane straps, or thermal performance, keep looking. The climate here doesn't punish you immediately, which is part of what makes it tricky. It punishes you slowly, over years, in the form of corrosion, leaks, mold, high electricity bills, and the things that quietly fail when you finally do get hit by an unusual storm.

Build for the climate you actually have, not the one you wish you had, and your home will reward you for the entire time you live in it.
